I try to write the books I would love to come upon, that are honest, concerned with real lives, human hearts, spiritual transformation, families, secrets, wonder, craziness—and that can make me laugh. When I am reading a book like this, I feel rich and profoundly relieved to be in the presence of someone who will share the truth with me, and throw the lights on a little, and I try to write these kinds of books. Books, for me, are medicine.

In photography there is always “the eye”.  The purposeful, dicerning, inquisitive, curious, introspective eye of whomever is shooting.  What, then, is the objective, or explanation, of a “naive eye”?  An approach that takes everything at face value.  A photographer who doesn’t ask questions; takes people as they present themselves and asks for nothing more to be given.  I find it can be endlessly entrancing to not know anything.
This woman could very well be a prostitute knowing what I know about the building that this portrait was taken in front of.  I’d rather not tell anyone this information.  Is that in some way withholding information from the audience that could be important to know?
